Easy Detachable Collar DIY

Photobucket

Hello friends! It's Mandi, from Here's Looking at Me, Kid, with an easy DIY that most all of us can use. Detachable collars are everywhere right now, adorned with beads, trimmed in lace, and even made from leather. Personally, I've been looking for just a simple white collar I can attach to sweaters, dresses, or even T-shirts for some added interest. While at the thrift store, I spotted a frumpy white shirt with the cutest collar and decided a DIY was in order.

I'm sure someone with better sewing skills than me could easily make a collar like this from scratch, but since I had found a perfect collar on a thrifted white shirt that was too awkwardly shaped and large to layer underneath outfits, I took scissors to the darn thing. All I did was cut along the collar, leaving extra room to neatly trim after first removing it. I wanted to keep the fold-down inside of the collar so that I could tuck it into certain tops and pin along the edge to secure its place. To attach the collar to this particular sweater, I simply used a pretty little brooch, not bothering to fix the rough edges. If you're extra detail-oriented, you could hem along the cut edge, or just use liquid fray check.

The next time you're at the thrift store, be sure to check for blouses with pretty collars, and don't be deterred by the frump factor. Remember- scissors can be your best friend when accessorizing your wardrobe!

GAH! Only 15 minutes ago I took photos for my own DIY version of a collar. I haven't posted it yet, but now I feel like I'm a copy cat. I guess great minds think alike. - Leah

I like this idea, especially for everyday, but also for Halloween,as I can now turn a plain thrifted black velvet dress into a 'Wednesday Adams' costume for next year! Thanks for the tutorial :)

I love collars, lace, beaded, cute cotton. I was very tempted by an ivory beaded peter pan necklace collar on a recent trip to HK....sadly I din't buy and definitely regret it now!

Great post! I have absolutely no sewing skills and a small budget, but all I dream about are fancy detachable collars! I will have to try this out!

This is a great idea--I've been wanting to do something like this but sometimes struggle at sewing without a pattern (at least for something that would be a little oddly-shaped, like this), but now I'm thinking I could just get a blouse with a cute collar from a thrift store and use that as a pattern!
